Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for awhile, you might consider entering your first CrossFit competition to test your newfound fitness and skills. Or, if you’ve already done your first competition, you might be looking for some advice on how to prepare better and increase your performance. Before doing anything, be sure to consult with Coach Ted on the best approach.

Here are 5 tips for for approaching a competition:

1. Work on your weaknesses leading up to the competition so you’re well rounded and prepared. If you’re weak on Olympic movements, get technical help from Coach Ted and practice as much as you can. Consider watching a few videos to get technical pointers.

2. Look at the movement and weight standards for upcoming competitions and see what categories you can reasonably be competitive in. It’s likely to be scaled, but be sure to challenge yourself. Every competition is different. Some competitions have “open” categories where anyone can enter and some even have divisions that are unjudged.

3. Speaking of judging, having a judge can be a real eye opener for new CrossFitters. If you’ve never had a judge, get one of the more experienced members to judge you closely on regular daily WODs. You’ll notice a big difference in your output and performance! Make sure to be critical (but positive) of your reps and take the no-reps in stride. This will get you ready for the stress of being judged on gameday.

4. Get plenty of rest, especially the week of a competition. Consider cutting down your WOD volume. Some competitors will do the regular WODs but cut the repetitions in half or loads down to a bare minimum. This minimizes the impact on your body while still keeping you sharp.

5. Practice the WODs! Most competitions will release the WODs the week before the actual competition. See if you can practice the movements or the entire WOD during the week to get a feel for it. Most competitions have oddball movements, stuff that you never practice, e.g. a stone lift or shotput. Try to find the equipment and get in a few practice reps.

Lastly, a lot of competitors have a tendency to overtrain leading up to a competition. This leads to injury. Avoid this rookie mistake and make sure you’re staying safe with your volume, loads, and complexity of movements. If you just learned muscle-ups, don’t blow out a shoulder practicing them to death.

Choosing a CrossFit gym is not only about proximity to your home or work. Every CrossFit gym will have its own “personality” and it’s important that you visit a few of them before you choose. Try the free intro WODS and interact with the trainers and the members. Find the right fit for you and your CrossFit experience will be that much more rewarding!

With over 4200 CrossFit boxes worldwide and more opening up every month, chances are there are more than one CrossFit gym in your community. In Ocala, home of CrossFit Iron Legion, there are five affiliates as of the end of 2012. If you’re thinking about trying CrossFit and don’t know which gym is right for you, there are several keys to picking the right one.

Coaching. The trainers are key because they will be coaching you every time you walk into the gym. Look for trainers that are fired up to coach new members and not bias their coaching towards one type of member versus another. Also look for coaches that are excellent communicators and know how to break down some of the complicated movements into simple drills and concepts.

Programming. Programming is the CrossFit term for training, and when deciding on a gym, what kind of training each particular gym offers can make a big difference. This is a little bit tougher to evaluate, especially if you’re new, because programming changes on a daily basis and you might not be experienced enough to evaluate. What I recommend is trying the free workout at several gyms in your area and ask good questions of either the owner or the coaches. Do they focus on strength work? Body weight movements? Olympic lifting? Do they have a competition track or do they cater to new people or both?

Here’s an example of why programming is important. You might be a competitive athlete, having done a sport in college, and your sport was of the endurance variety. You want to get stronger. Some gyms specialize in strength training and do less metcon WODs. And, there might be only one gym in your area that sends athletes to competitions. That could be the gym for you.

On the flipside, if you’re only interested in losing weight and getting generally fit, you might want to pick the gym that focuses more on metcon and bodyweight training and less on weight lifting. Evaluate your own fitness goals and see which gym compliments those goals.

Community. Not every gym is created equal. Some gyms have stronger communities than others. Consider how many members each gym has and how close knit they are. Do they support each other? Are they welcoming of new members? Do they do events together outside of the gym? Are there cliques or do the members not interact at all?

Something to consider is the demographic of each gym. An example might be one gym is comprised mostly of college students because of it’s proximity to the local university, while another has mostly working professionals. Look for a gym where the character fits what you’re looking for and is welcoming of new members.

Getting better at CrossFit and increasing your fitness isn’t just about going to the gym and doing the daily WOD. There is a lot you can do outside of the gym to take yourself to the next level and increase performance.

Diet: First and foremost, what you’re eating plays a major role in training. This can’t be discounted. Consider getting on a Paleo friendly diet or other diet that supplements your training goals and be sure to replenish yourself with recovery in mind. Consume a recovery drink (protein shake or other) post-WOD or otherwise eat a healthy meal shortly after a tough gym session so you don’t remain in a catabolic state. Repairing muscles and refueling is critical.

Note, this isn’t gear you have to have, but rather it’s gear you’ll want to have if you plan on working out regularly and want to see your performance increase.

If you check the gym bag of most any CrossFit firebreather, you’ll find the following:

This was our first event together as a family! I know a lot of you really dug deep to sign up for this event and for many of you this was your first taste of competition. I got the impression that you liked it!

I watch you and train you guys everyday. I knew you were all ready for this event and every one of you proved me right! Some of you had great speed and some of you were really coordinated – but all of you pulled together as a Team and let Ocala know that we are here and we are strong!

It really took my breath away as I watched our “tent” area fill up with people. It started out with just a few of us setting up and ended with members, friends, family and supporters everywhere! The post race gathering under our tent is what CrossFit is all about. Kids running around, members laughing and high fiving, hugs and pictures – a true sense of accomplishment on everyone’s face! I can not be any prouder of my Pack than I am right now!

We were a Team going into this event – and I feel like we left the event with an even stronger family than before. Competition is healthy and a natural progression for our training. It strengthens the bonds of our family and gives us all a chance to display who we are not only as individuals, but as a strong and growing family! Be sure to check out the hundreds of pictures on our Facebook page!!

Hero Rush 2012 – a good start! Next up – Zombie WODS in December!! After that… CrossFit Iron Legion takes on 2013!! I am honored to be a part of this growing family!!

We have suspended the 7pm classes at this time. This class time will be reinstated as soon as we can fill it. School season, fall sports and time changes affect everyone’s schedules – we understand. Once we get through this season we will gladly reinstate the 7pm.

Please contact us if this inconveniences you in any way!
