Down for Donuts 8
Down for Donuts
We’re so happy you’re here–Let us tell you a little bit about Down for Donuts.
It all started with a little girl named Kiera who will soon be 8 years old, coincidentally, we’re planning our eighth Down for Donuts. Kiera had a Down Syndrome diagnosis at birth and has been surprising her parents ever since. This fun, rambunctious, donut loving girl is inspiration for this annual event.
After Kiera was born, her parents, Iron Legion owners Ted + Karen we’re lacking in support and education from their medical providers. But, thanks to the wonderful CrossFit community, they were connected to friends in the Tampa area who were working with organizations that offered support for people with Down Syndrome and their families. Immediately they felt relief and wanted to do something similar at their own gym. Our grassroots event that would evolve into Down for Donuts was born. That Saturday, the Iron Legion community got together, sported bright colorful socks and worked out hard for a cause they didn’t really know too much about, they just knew it was important. It was that day that Kiera’s parents told their gym family about her diagnosis.
That first year we we’re able to raise $1,000 from a handful of gym members. The next year, it more than doubled and the event became more formal, adopting the name Down for Donuts to recognize the Down Syndrome community and Kiera’s obsession with delicious donuts. Since that second year, all profits raised have gone directly to GiGi’s Playhouse and their local Achievement Centers. We are proud to announce that last year, with the help of everyone involved we were able to donate close to $15,000.
The structure of the event has grown and evolved as well, but the general structure is:
2 Scheduled CrossFit style workouts
1 Unscheduled Floater workout
